The idea of the project is based on the concept of “town twinning” (sister cities) whereby towns or cities in geographically and politically distinct areas are paired. The “town twinning” concept is applied in the cities of Leipzig and Detroit by focusing on the issue of shrinkage and abandonment.Three examples of that connection will be realised.
For the first connection, two abandoned buildings are chosen, one in each city. In each space a short film will be shot, of a trombone player playing in each empty space. Both short films will be presented in a split video, in a way that the music of both trombonists creates a composition.
The second connection concerns two abandoned shops that signify the economical and cultural past of the cities, of industries and small shops that run down and left many abandoned spaces. Between the two buildings there will be an exchange of their signs indicating the buildings’ business establishment.
The third connection will be realised between two buildings, which are renovated and transformed into living and cultural spaces by associations (Verein) in each city.
An exchange of materials that are used during the renovation of the buildings by each association will take place. The objects selected to exchange are two windows, one of each front façade of the buildings. The characteristic european and american window will slightly change the facade of each building.
